Story and philosophy

A world-class spirit

At 9 RITOS we are clear about the pre-Hispanic roots of this sacred drink, which is why we honour both the process and the flavour. We look after its distillation and its making with the cooked sap of several maguey or agave plants.

Mezcal 9 Ritos

A conceptual brand

9 RITOS is a conceptual brand that aims to honour the process and the flavour of the sacred agave drink.

Historically, mezcal goes back to a pre-Hispanic indigenous tradition, the Mictlán. With the name we pay homage to all our dead and to the nine levels they had to cross for their soul to be received by Mictlantecuhtli and Mictlancíhuatl, the deities of the Mexica underworld.

Made in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, from 100% espadín agave, 9 RITOS is an authentic Mexican mezcal for celebrating mystical moments.

The symbol

The skull of Mictlantecuhtli

This is the skull of MICTLANTECUHTLI: Lord of the Underworld. Its colours and shapes are drawn from the legendary Oaxacan tapestries of Teotitlán, coveted worldwide.

Alongside the skull of our god are two heads of xoloitzcuintle, the dogs that accompany the dead as they cross the underworld.

The Zapotec legend of Mictlantecuhtli still echoes in Mitla, the city of the dead — our inspiration for the logo.

Process

100% natural and organic

The name agave comes from Greek and means "admirable". It has been a Mexican symbol for thousands of years, and its pointed shape and distinctive green are a visual reference whenever Mexican art is discussed — from photography to painting and film.

Denomination of Origin

Registered since 2021

In 2021 Mezcal 9 RITOS obtained the Denomination of Origin. Under strict compliance with the Official Mexican Standard, it was registered as a mezcal producer in the state of Oaxaca. Denomination of Origin is granted to products native to a region whose quality or characteristics are due exclusively to the geographic environment.

From day one, 9 RITOS has wanted a win-win relationship. A win for the fields where the drink begins, all the way to the end of production, where the details are refined so your palate can taste this experience.

Our philosophy is built on the love of our roots, with a clear goal: to care for the land, its ecosystem and the people who work it.

Replanting is essential

For every agave, ten more

For every agave we use, we plant ten more, creating more jobs in the producing regions and making sure we keep looking after the species.

We only use wild agaves that have a replanting plan, since otherwise the natural resources of the area — and therefore its communities — would be affected. 9 RITOS has been committed to planting wild agaves long before the mezcal was launched.

Because of its distinctive flavour, mezcal can be a little demanding for certain palates. Some people drink it neat with a few orange wedges, while others prefer it in a cocktail that brings out its flavour.
